Three lines of changelog, and that is all
The original lists exactly three items: the bundled UniFi Network 10.4.57 app, a single line reading "Improved device stability" with no further detail, and one bugfix for the UCG-Industrial. That is the whole release.
It rolls out in stages. Your device may not show the update for a few days. That is not a fault — it is the normal gradual rollout.
The OS version is not the function version
This is where two things that often get lumped together part ways. UniFi OS is the operating layer of the gateway. The functions you work with every day — routing, VLANs, port management — live in the UniFi Network app. In 5.1.28 that app is version 10.4.57.
But that app version is not new. It already came with the previous OS 5.1.27. 5.1.28 merely bundles it again. So not a single new network function arrives with this update. Anyone waiting for one is watching the wrong version number.
The one real fix touches a single device
That leaves the bugfix. The changelog tags it explicitly with [UCG-Industrial], and it applies only to that one model. Every other Cloud Gateway gets nothing from this release but the "device stability" line, for which there are no details.
What it repairs is a specific fault: the "Multicast and Broadcast Blocked" setting did not work on the UCG-Industrial. The block was active but blocked nothing. Broadcast and multicast packets passed through anyway.
That sounds minor. On a large installation it is not. Broadcast and multicast traffic adds extra load to the network, especially over Wi-Fi. That is precisely what the block is for — and on the very device built for dense networks, it had not been working until now.
Why a repaired filter can become a new source of trouble
Now the block works — and that is where the actual work begins. Switch "Multicast and Broadcast Blocked" on across the board, and it blocks more than you bargained for.
Multicast carries services you use daily: IPTV, Apple TV and AirPlay discovery, cross-access-point discovery between devices. Set the block blindly and those services vanish — and the failure then looks like a Wi-Fi problem, even though it sits in a single setting.
Before, this went unnoticed because the block did not work anyway. The fix is what makes the function reliable. Reliable also means it now does exactly what you tell it to. On an installation with IPTV and Apple TV, you need to know in advance which traffic is allowed through. That is a configuration question, not a one-click job.
Who on the island actually benefits
The UCG-Industrial is not a device for a two-room flat. Fanless, 10 GbE, a 350 W PoE budget, built for 50+ devices and 500+ concurrent users. That is the class for a large finca with several buildings, a villa with dense camera and access-point load, a warehouse or industrial hall. We have built installations like these.
These are exactly the networks affected by the fix — because they are the ones that generate enough broadcast and multicast traffic for the block to matter. Anyone running a smaller UCG-Ultra, Max or Fiber gets only the stability line from 5.1.28 and need do nothing more than come along at the next maintenance window.
The fanless design is a genuine argument on the island — dusty, warm equipment rooms with no fan noise. But that is a property of the device, not a change introduced by 5.1.28. The store price is €561 (EU store, as of 5 August 2026). That is the bare list price for the hardware. What to do now
On a running installation, an update is not something you do on the side. A backup, a maintenance window, then a check that everything still runs — that is the way. Updating a production gateway without both is the fastest route to a silent outage.
Before updating to 5.1.28
- Check whether there is a UCG-Industrial in use at all — otherwise the fix does nothing for you.
- Do not wait for instant availability: with the gradual rollout, the update may only appear after several days.
- Take a backup before applying and set a maintenance window.
- Leave auto-update off on production gateways.
- If you switch on "Multicast and Broadcast Blocked", first clarify whether IPTV, Apple TV or AirPlay run on the network.
